Do you draw characters doing what you want to happen to you?
Anonymous

this is a really interesting question with a really lengthy answer haha! i guess in short it would be yes… mostly. i’m not looking specifically for the things i draw to happen to me - i’m mostly intent on the mood of the pictures. in a sense, i am living what happens in my pictures though, as drawing has always meant so much to me and i genuinely feel what’s happening in my drawing as i draw it. (probably why most of my pictures learn towards calm / happy moods HAHA) in this way i’m able to live worlds and places i know i would probably never see with my own eyes. i have a very complex relationship with my art and therefore this question though so i’ll spare you the ramble haha!

I want to be an animator sosososo bad, I'm entering highschool next year (Ik I'm young) and I want to go to a vocational school and go into design and visual (art major), but the only flaw here is that I'm not good at all. i just kinda need advice. what classes you took, or should I just drop being an artist at all..
Anonymous

first, let me say this. there is no secret to art. anyone can learn how to do it. just because you’re not good now, doesn’t mean you can’t become good. every artist i know has started from where you are now. if you really believe that art is what you want to do for your career, keep practicing, improve, explore. you are still young, and that means you have time to get better before you think about art school. don’t drop being an artist if it’s your passion, you can learn to be great if you work hard at it.

that being said, each person learns differently. let me say here that i am not an art major, but i can tell you how i got to where i am in my art. in my case, i am almost entirely self-taught on how to draw. the last time i took an art class was the beginning of middle school, and i hated it haha. feel free to try some art classes: if they work for you, great, if they don’t, don’t worry about that either.

my best advice is the same as you’ve probably heard many people say: practice. practice every day, draw new things, try new mediums. it’s okay if you fail once or a hundred times, as long as you’re trying and practicing, you’re learning. step out of your comfort zone and open yourself up to new kinds of art.

(i found for me, it’s also really helpful to have a community— that is, other artist friends who you can draw with and can help critique your art, etc. look at other artists work and try to analyze in your mind how they made their picture. (do this for the art you like, of course, but also for the art you don’t like. ask yourself, why doesn’t this piece feel right to me?))

if art is truly your passion you’ll keep doing it no matter what hardships come your way. don’t beat up so hard on yourself, you’re not doing yourself any favours by telling yourself you suck. instead, if you don’t like your work, look back on it and ask why, so you can do better next time. turn your frustration into sweat www. good luck with your aspiring art career!

hi guys! i’ve recently moved into my college dorm and i’m still adjusting to life here. on top of starting classes soon, i have to also adjust to drawing on my laptop, which has a quite a few changes from the venue i’m used to working on. bear with me while i get my life in order and figure out how to draw on my new machine! i might not be posting as much in the next little while. thanks for understanding!
